Kokonew is the Yurok word for Red Headed Woodpecker. This revised design features a red headed woodpecker rendered in a watercolor style, perched on a limb made from a sturgeon back design. The painted treatment gives Kokonew a completely different look while keeping the bird and Native design at the center of the artwork.
Kokonew holds importance for North Coast Native people, including the Yurok, making this more than just a striking wildlife design.
