Wearing Our Designs: A Guide for Respectful Shoppers

Who is Down River Designs?

Down River Designs is a Native-owned brand rooted in Yurok country. Our designs are created by and for our community — and we also welcome shoppers from all backgrounds who want to engage with our work thoughtfully and respectfully.

Can non-Native people wear our designs?

Yes — and we genuinely appreciate your support. Choosing to wear our clothing is an act of solidarity with Native-made work, not an act of cultural appropriation. Our pieces are created to be shared and worn, not locked behind community membership. That said, we always encourage shoppers to take a moment to learn a little about what they're wearing and where it comes from.

We ask only that you wear our designs with care: don't claim cultural identity you don't hold, and don't misrepresent the meaning of specific imagery. Curiosity and respect go a long way.

What do the designs mean?

Each piece draws on creative traditions, landscapes, and stories connected to Yurok country and the broader Indigenous Pacific Northwest. Specific design references and inspirations are shared in individual product descriptions — we encourage you to read those before you buy.

We speak only for our own creative work. We don't claim to represent all Indigenous peoples or nations, and we encourage you to seek out voices from other communities to understand their distinct traditions.

Is wearing Indigenous-designed clothing offensive?

Wearing clothing made by Native designers and purchased directly from a Native-owned brand is generally considered supportive, not offensive. The distinction that matters is who benefits. When you buy from us, you're supporting Native creators directly. That's very different from mass-produced imitation "tribal" or "Native-inspired" goods made without Indigenous involvement.

If you're ever unsure whether something is respectful, asking is always the right move — and so is listening to the answer.

How can I support Native-made work?

  • Buy directly from Native-owned brands like Down River Designs — not from retailers selling imitation designs.
  • Read the story behind what you're buying. Understanding context deepens your connection to the work.
  • Share authentically when you post. If you tag us or share photos, let your audience know you're wearing Native-made clothing from a Native-owned business.
  • Recommend us to friends who are curious about Indigenous design — word of mouth matters enormously to small Native-owned businesses.
  • Follow Native voices on social media and in your reading. The more you listen to Indigenous creators, educators, and community members, the more naturally respectful your engagement becomes.

A note on authority

The answers here reflect our own perspective as the creators of Down River Designs. We're not speaking on behalf of all Native nations, cultures, or communities — each has its own protocols and values. If you have questions about a specific cultural practice or community, please seek out voices from within that community.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. We're glad you're here.
